Math: Study of Area and Surface Area. This week we will be practicing calculating the area of triangles and circles, and the surface area of cylinders, prisms, and pyramids. Homework will practice this material.
Please help your child understand the importance of labeling their diagrams and using the formulas.

The Week of October 11th

Social Sciences: Test this Thursday on "Adventure 1" in Places in Time. This will include the geography of Western Canada (climate, vegetation, terrain), the location of all provinces of Canada on a map, and the connection between the geography of a territory and the economy of that region. Students should study the sheets in their duotangs as well as the text.

Math: Test this Friday on multiplication, division, and factorization. Review questions will include addition, subtraction, area and perimeter, and some simple fractions. Nightly homework will help students prepare for this test.

Music: continue to practice the three songs for G A B, and practice reading music (recognizing whole, half and quarter notes, reading line notes and space notes, and placing notes on the staff)

Reading: students should be reading every night, yet most students have not changed their book since the beginning of the year. Please supervise your child's reading. It is the only way for them to improve.

Our school board and our school in particular, is the subject of a research project on the use of laptop computers in the classroom being undertaken by the Universite de Montreal. Welcome back!

This week, students will have to work on math Thursday night, and over the weekend should remember to finish their home reading and bring it back to school for Monday so that it can be changed.

From this point on, students are expected to read every night and change their book without being reminded by me. Please help me by checking in with your child and making sure they have a designated time each day to sit and read. Frequent practice is the only way to increase fluency, build word knowledge and expand their vocabulary. Please help them reach their potential!

Hello Families,

This morning the CSSS Nurse assigned to our school gave grade five a short first aid course. If you have a look at the booklet your child will be bringing home today you will get an idea of what they learned.

As a result of this course, we did not have a math class today. The only homework for tonight is to write a short (short=1 page double spaced) text about a time the student injured themselves. This will be due tomorrow in class.

Math problem solving will come home tomorrow, and the only homework for the long weekend will be to read.

Please remember that Parents' Night it Wednesday. Your interview time will be sent home from the school secretary, who coordinates the interview schedule. I look forward to seeing you and having the chance to discuss your child's progress!

Hello Families,
This week the homework follows the same routine:
-1 page of math per night except for Monday because the students had a test )and didn't learn anything new that day to practice)
-the assignment on "The Little Prince" is due Thursday
-students need to practice their play and know their role by heart for Monday
-2 new songs have been assigned for the recorder, practicing notes G, A, B, C, and D
- nightly reading, please, in their A-Z book or in a good novel

Hello Families,

This week, students will need to :

1) do one page of math every night
2) do the corrections from their math test (class average 88%)
3) do the corrections on the last assignment on The Little Prince
4) read pages 15-19 in Places in Time
5) practice the recorder and so the sheets on "line notes"
6) Select their favorite passage from the first eight chapters of the novel and write about why they like it

Thursday: no math homework, although "Mathfrog" remains linked on the blog

Language Arts
Chapters 1 and 2 of "The Little Prince" by Thursday
Introductory paragraphs to be answered: elaborate on one of your answers to the statements on the photocopied sheet.
Reading A-Z, to be done when chapters of "The Little Prince" are completed.

Curriculum Night takes place on Thursday.

There is no school for the children on Friday.

Hello Families,

This week students will have to complete the following:

Math - one page from the JUMP math workbook per night (pages are marked and dated)

Social Science - read pages 30-32 in Places in Time for Thursday and complete part of the graphic organizer in the orange duotang.

Reading A-Z - read the assigned book, and have a parent sign the sheet when the book is read and understood. These books can be changed as often as you like.

What is your opinion about the effects of plastic trash on the environment?

*students must use data from their red duotangs to support their opinion
Good essays will state the problem, state the opinion of the author, and support the author's message with quotes from different sources.

Hello Families,

The week we are working on multiplciation of decimals!
You can help your child with equations such as 0.03 x10, 0.03 x100, 0.03 x5, and 0.03 x 0.1

There will be a short quiz Thursday to measure their understanding, particulary as participation today was less-than-stellar (see other blog post).

As well, the students need to read, and complete their vocabulary sheets.

Mrs. Levesque would like those who can to bring a small green plant to school for Thursday's science class.

ALSO - many students are sick. Please keep them home, as many are getting run-down, tired and sicker. Right now there are many different kinds of viruses going around, and keeping students home form school helps us all get well much faster.

Hello Families,

A short week with short homework, and a note to remind parents to let me know in writing if you know your child has not done their homework. Three children did not do last week's social sciences questions (due last Thursday, with 4 nights to do it, as well as the weekend if need be), the number one reason being that they were, "too busy."

Math - one pager per night in our unit on decimals
ELA - a short text resuming what we have been studying in social sciences class. One piece of student work will be posted on the class blog.
Reading -A to Z book and homereading (self-chosen tradebook)
Social Sciences - begin to study for the unit test (next week).

Math - new unit on Decimals!
In general, one or more pages per night as we review the cycle 2 content.

Social Studies

Read through pages 24 - 33 of the text in order to be able to list the major changes that take place in British territory during this time period.

In class we will review daily life of in New France in order to be able to compare
French Society circa 1745 to Canadian Society circa 1820. Good things to review and discuss at home!

* complete 1 page of math each night except Friday

*read the Rememberance Day Newspaper arcticlesand complete the organizer in their Social Studies duotang

I need to ask for the A-Z book to be done and signed for Thursday so that I can correct the quizes and the children can correct and take a new book for the following weekend. There was a big improvement in scores from the first to second week of this program, I am happy to say! If your child is struggling, please read with them more than once during the week. If we don't see an improvement, they may need a lower level book.

This week I will be evaluting math progress. Please review good work habits with your child, and ask them what strategies and procedures for answering questions completely they have learned.

As always, we form a partnership to help your child. Thank you for taking the time to check on their work and ask them about what they are learning.

Nov 3rd: Homework for Parents and Students!

Hello Families,

This week I am asking parents to keep a close eye on our new leveled home-reading program. Students need to be able to manage the different steps with our help:

1 - read the book until the reading is fluent and the recall and comprehension are strong
*a parent must sign that the book was read (and asking questions will help build comprehension success)

** this week, fill in the graphic organizer about the book, writing in full sentences and PREFERABLY in cursive writing

2 - take a comprehension quiz (given by me)
3 - make corrections to the quiz
4 - when all corrections are made, sign out a new book

Still with me? I hope so! It can be a cumbersome program to administer, but I have seen such good results I believe it is worth the effort.

Students who read through the book quickly and with good comprehension may change their books more frequently.

So, for this week:

Leveled book: to be read and graphic organizer to be completed by Friday
Math: One page per night

Hello Families,

This week and next the students are completing a long Math Exam written by the Ministry of Education. They will be spending many hours on math in class, so I have decided to give them a break from Math homework this week.

English: parents and students read and sign the information document on Book Responses.
Students will have to write a three paragraph response to the book they are presently reading.
Due Thursday.

Students who did not do their grammar corrections last week have until Tuesday to complete the work.

Language Arts in yellow duotang: Students must answer the questions about the article "Water: Better from a Bottle?" Answers must be written in complete sentences.
DUE: Thursday, September 11th.

Math: One page per night will be assigned, and is due the next day.

Reading: students are expected to read from their self-chosen homereading book every evening for at least 20 minutes. Books may be changed as soon as the student has finished the text.

Please send in a 4-6" photo of your child
Please sign the school rules in the agenda
Scholastic due September 22nd.

No homework will be given on Friday other than reading.

Hello Everyone!

It is a pleasure to be back, and getting to know you is going to be one of the joys of this month.

I am a firm beleiver in clear and open communication, and this blog is an experiement for me. I wanted to make sure parents could be kept informed of school items from anywhere, whether they are with their child or not, whether the paprwork gets home of not (wink ;).

This page is intended for students and parents to use to check on assignments, paperwork and other items. You can subscribe to the post, which means that when I post an update it will come to your email directly.

Comments can be made, and I will check daily for comments and questions, although I cannot guarantee homeowrk help nightly, you can use this as a place to post ideas, helpful hints and encouraging messages!

This blog does not replace checking the agenda, which is where your child's teachers will put hard copies of paperwork, personal messages and other information. It is meant as an additional source of information, not a relacement for the processes already in place.

As this is a new project, your feedback will be helpful to determining the directtion this log takes and it's usefulness. It is a dynamic site - it is best used when it has many contributors, but it has to be a wise time investment for all concnerned. So please give me feedback about what would be helpful on this site and our class site.
