Wednesday, December 12th, 2012 Math Test

Hello Everyone,

The class average for the second part of the math test was 68%. The third and final part will be a problem solving section given on Friday (not Thursday) to give students a chance to revise.

Students should complete their error analysis as soon as possible and before Friday, so that it serves as revision for the test.

The last question on the test was hard one, but one covered in class twice. The best answer given is below.

Have a lovely evening,
Kathy Napier

Under the title "Better Late than Never"

Sorry to blog followers for not posting this sooner. I have been trying to shake a bad cold and let this slip. As you child may have told you, I am now out of school with vocal exhaustion brought on by the cold. I hope to be back quickly.

This week's homework:

Math: revising multiplication and division algorithms, including with decimals

ELA: Poetry response, started in class and due Thursday
Parent's signatures on two book responses from term1

The marks on the report card, therefore, will not be a simple averaging of these, but will include these as well as classwork and diagnostic assessment used to determine their understanding.

Have a wonderful week,
Kathy Napier

May 7th-11th

Hello Families,

The Ministry of Education Exams begin this week. Thank you for reading and signing the letter Mme Lucie and I sent three weeks ago, and I would like to remind you of the following details included in that letter:

-students will need to be rested for these exams, as they required a great deal of concentration

-students need to be present, and if they are unavoidable absent, advanced notice will help me attempt to reschedule parts of the exam missed

-students should have a water bottle for class

-students may bring an extra snack for morning recess

-homework will be reduced, but revising concepts and processes discussed during the review period would be wise. Your child's math dictionary provides a good summary of key content.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Naturalist Presentation: Kat Usher from the Earthvalues Institute will be here Tuesday. Students are encouraged to bring an artifact to discuss with her (such as a robin's egg shell, a nest, or other evidence of animals around us).

Thank you to those who plan to participate - the profits will be used to bring down the cost of the end of year trip for your children.

Math: Current unit on Data management includes homework on mean, median and mode. Please review these concepts with your child as they are a little tricky. Homework will also include practice with skills and strategies in preparation for the exam.

ELA: Read. Please.
Special note: some students must redo last week's reading comprehension due to poor grammar, punctuation, and lack of full and complete sentences. Please review your child's work to ensure that their work represents their best effort.

Social Science: The focus of the current unit is the major changes Quebec underwent between 1905 and 1980. The fascinating topic will require a great deal of reading in Places In Time. Interested parents can read the text and help their child learn about such topics as the fascinating development of hydroelectric dams and their importance to the development of Quebec. Critical readers  will notice that this topic receives more attention than unionization or the development of major social programs.
